Sara Sunshine

Hi, I'm Sara Sunshine - elementary school principal, veteran classroom teacher, and founder of The Curriculum Headquarters.

I always knew that I wanted to make an impact on the world.

From the time I was a little girl, in grade school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher.  I went to a school where, let's just say, "old school" was their methodology of education, discipline, and just about everything else.

I always loved going to school to see my friends, and I even loved to learn, but since I was full of energy, spunk and questions I wasn't always the "teacher's pet."  Many times I felt that the teachers hated my questions and wished that I would just sit quietly, not making a sound, rather than being involved and engaged in the lessons.

A deep seated life's mission  was growing inside of me.  I believed with my whole heart that learning and teaching should not be this unpleasant.

I wanted to be a teacher unlike any of my teachers.  I knew that when I would have my own class, I would be  the kind of teacher that would make learning fun! I would play games with my students, make plays with them, build things and explore the world, but most of all,  I would be the kind of teacher that would answer questions  - truthfully -   and love my students just because they were each unique and special.

My dream became a reality when I got my first job, as a fourth grade teacher, while I was still in college.

 I loved teaching!

I loved my students!  I spent every moment of every day, either teaching or preparing for my next class.  I wrote plays for  my students, sewed their costumes, practiced their lines and cheered them on as they performed in front of their parents.  In my spare time I taught my students to knit and play jump rope and created fun newsletters for them to read and enjoy. And of course I taught tons of material and skills while playing all types of games.

My students blossomed, I was loving every moment and in addition to all the fun we were having, my students were learning and excelling.  Even academically weak and struggling students who hadn’t done well in other years, suddenly blossomed in my class.. Every experience with my students just further cemented in me, my passion to become a better teacher and to prove that kids DO love to learn and can learn and succeed (when they are taught in a way that interests and motivates them.)

During this time I married, and my family started to grow.  As each of my five children were born and then  grew older, I found that I had an even deeper sense of compassion and love for my students.  I was suddenly able to relate to them as children with family struggles and I felt myself growing even more deeply as an understanding and loving teacher.

As the years flew by,  I read every book on education that I could get my hands on.  The First Days of School by Harry K. and Rosemary T. Wong, All of Ron Clark's Books and many more.  I always learned so much from the  books I read.  I went to Professional Development Teacher Training Workshops each year,  where I learned new techniques and tried them out in my classroom.

The specific educational area that I became obsessed with, as I was becoming a more experienced teacher was curriculum planning.  I loved to organize my  curriculum by looking at the  school year, and breaking  it down into months, days and periods,  preparing my lessons in a way that would   ensure that I would be able to  maximize my time with my students.  I wanted to refine and perfect each lesson I taught, and present the material in an exciting and engaging way in order to reach every single one of my students.  I also wanted to present the new material, as quickly, and as clearly as possible so that my students would be able to produce results and move on to the next level of learning.

Many nights found me on my computer, creating worksheets for my students in all the subject areas that I taught, and tailoring them to fit my curriculum goals.

What I noticed consistently each year and with each class  I taught, was that the subject that my students found particularly challenging was -  WRITING.  I knew how important learning to write was, and I wanted to find a way to teach my students to write, and love the process as well!

After 19 years in the classroom, I was offered a job as an Elementary School Principal.

At first, I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the classroom!

I called a mentor of mine who had been the principal in the school where I taught for 13 years.  I asked him whether he thought I should take the job.  He said - “Yes! You will love being a principal and you will love the impact that you will be able to make on your students, their families and on the whole community.”  I took the job.

One of my first responsibilities as a principal- or as I liked to think of it -as Instructional leader -  of this small school, was to look at the curriculum, organize it, see what they had, where the holes were and review each grade's curriculum with the teachers.  For most of the subjects there were textbooks and workbooks.

When it came to writing, there was no clear curriculum, each teacher was doing her own thing.

I started to research programs to implement, that would cover the necessary and important writing skills at each grade level and would build from grade to grade.

Interestingly enough, the programs that looked good, were extremely expensive, cumbersome, difficult to use, very lengthy and didn’t produce the results I wanted.  I wanted every grade starting from grade two to be publishing at least three essays a year, or one per term.  After many disappointing purchases of writing programs, I set out to create my own.

Behold! Curriculum HQ was born!

I started by writing a curriculum to teach students to write a Biography.

I had recently read the biography of Irena Sendler, a young woman who lived during the time of WWII.  She was a nurse who risked her life going into Jewish ghettos and smuggling out over 2,000 Jewish babies.

I was so inspired by her life's story and by the impact that she had on some students, who many years later, found her story, that I wanted my students to research people who had made a difference to society, and write about it.

I started by creating worksheets that outlined the skills that the students would need, to write a biography. I included concept maps, clear examples and papers upon which the students would write their essay.  All work was done in class, so that the teacher could help the students through the process each step at a time.   I used the book about Irena Sendler as a Mentor Text to illustrate the skills and bring excitement and passion to the project.

The students each chose someone who inspired them -the project was a sensational success! The students were invested in their writing, and owned the process. Gone were the complaints that they had “nothing to write about.” Gone were the moans and groans.  The students wanted to get their message out.  They wanted to express their excitement and respect about their subject.

After that huge victory, I was hooked!  I wanted my students and teachers to have the same success with other kinds of writings.  So little by little, each curriculum was written, tried, tested and proven amazing.

We now have TEN Writing Programs covering these genres:

  • Friendly Letter Writing
  • Business Letter Writing
  • Persuasive Letter Writing Level 2
  • Persuasive Letter Writing Level 3
  • Biography
  • Nonfiction Essay
  • Feature Article
  • Personal Narrative
  • Book Report
  • Persuasive Book Review

Each Writing Program comes with a complete set of student worksheets, a teacher’s guide and a Mentor Text.

The Worksheets cover and teach all the skills needed for that specific writing.

It takes the students through the process of writing an essay from the beginning to the end. Starting by explaining what the writing is and ending with the students complete essay.

The teachers receive a Teacher's Edition that comes in a PowerPoint format, or if purchased as an Online Course, is taught together with each Worksheet, in an Explainer Video.  The Mentor Text is included so that the material is taught through examples.  The Mentor Texts are illustrated  Children's Books in the genre of the writing, that are narrated by a fantastic narrator.

Learning how to write, becomes something that the students look forward to!

The Programs are for grades 2-8.  We recommend different grade levels per program.

Many Schools All Across the U.S. Implemented The Writing Programs Into Their Curriculum.

The word spread that there were writing programs that were helping students complete excellent essays and many schools reached out to order them.

To date, over 50 schools, are using the Writing Programs over the past 8 years and have had great success with it.

When I saw the success that teachers were having with the Writing Programs, I decided to make it available online.
